This reportpresents the final roadmap and recommendations of the European European exascale Software Initiative (EESI). Section 3details what are the motivations, objectives and agenda of EESI. The impact of exascale computing for the Science, Industry and Society are described. Section 4presents the EESI vision and recommendations after having detailed the European strengths and weaknesses in the worldwide HPC competition. Section 0explains what would be the consequences for Europe not implementing its own exascale program and summarizes the EESI final recommendations.

This document is the consolidation of the 4 reports of the 4 working groups inside WP3: “Application Grand Challenges”. The goal of this work package is to create and manage four working groups of applicative experts to:

investigate the application drivers for Peta and Exascale computing
identify needs and expectations of scientific applications in the Excascale time-frame
evaluate the economic dimension and impact on European competitiveness
build a European vision and of a roadmap

This document summarizes the final reports of the four work packages which were organized and managed in the EESI work package 4: “Enabling Technologies for Exaflop Computing”. The goal of the work package was to create and manage four working groups of software experts to:

Build a cartography of vendor HPC research activities;
Achieve an assessment of computer science activities;
Analyse the impact of Exascale computing on numerical analysis and scientific software engineering;
Investigate and propose programs in education and training for the next generation of computational scientists;
Build a European roadmap and a set of recommendations.
